Stuck With a Tune? How to Identify a Song You Can’t Remember

Image

Ever have a song stuck in your head but can’t remember the name? It happens to everyone! You might hear it on the radio, a friend plays it, or it pops into your head from years ago.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need the actual song to find it anymore! Google’s got your back with a cool song identifier built into the Google app and YouTube for Android (coming soon to YouTube Music, too!).

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the Google app and tap the microphone icon in the search bar.
  • Select “Search a song” and start humming or singing! It can even listen to your voice, not just the song itself.
  • The app analyzes the sound and tries to identify the song. It can still work even if you don’t know all the words!

When I tested it, I hummed “Seven Nation Army” by Jack White, and it got it right (with a 63% match – maybe my humming wasn’t perfect!). It also worked for other songs like Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” and The Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

This feature is also available on the YouTube app for Android. Just tap the search icon, then the microphone, and switch to the “Song” tab. Here, it will simply search for the song you hum or sing instead of showing a list of results with percentages.

The Google app seems to be the better option right now because it gives you a list of possible matches with percentages based on how well your singing or humming matched the song. You can also explore these other options to see if they’re related to the song you were thinking of, maybe even songs inspired by it!

So, next time you have a song stuck in your head, don’t worry! Just grab your phone and sing or hum a bit, and Google will help you find it.
